After a request from Chris Maron, in this entry I report about the Boley-Leinen LZ4SB carriage stops. I would like the entry to be sufficiently detailed to allow anyone to reproduce the original stops. Sadly, I have no cross slide stops. If you, beloved reader, have these stops, I invite you to report about them and let me know! I should add that the stops shown here are of “ordinary” type.

The tailstock Some time ago I bought an old series Boley Leinen lever tailstock to be fitted to my lathe. This is the tailstock: It is of the old type because it uses a split casting to lock the barrel as you can see in the picture. Leinen buid two flavors of this tailstock: one with a barrel that takes 363E collets (the 25mm collets) and other that takes the 323E collets (15mm collets).

The lubricants to be used After translating the oil tables that appear in the Boley Leinen datasheets to ISO grades, and according to my oil dealer, I ended using these oils: Spindle oil: Renolin MR 1 (ISO VG 5) Gearbox oil: Renolin MR 20 (ISO VG 68) Grease: Krafft Lithium grease NLGI 2 I want to add some notes about lubrication: Renolin MR is a detergent oil. This helped to clean the gearboxes from the old sludge.

Some days ago appeared in ebay a great Leinen MLZ 4 SB lathe to sell. The pictures in ebay also showed a manual for the lathe. This model is close to the type of my lathe. Thus, I decided to talk with the seller and to ask him if it is possible to send me a copy of the manual. People at der-gebrauchtwarenhandel, the Ebay seller, where really kind and they sent me a scan of the manual.

I was obsessed with those beautiful optional tailstocks built by Leinen that appear in the lathe parts catalog. An intense surveillance in ebay has given some partial results. The first attempt achieved this nice capstan-handle tailstock that admits the 25 mm 363E collets: However, although the tailstock is in pretty good condition (just cosmetic issues) it is not appropiate to the Leinen LZ4SB dimensions. It shares the 130mm center height but the bed dimensions are not the same.

I bought in german ebay a four jaws independent chuck with DIN 55022 number 4 fitting. This was not the kind of independent chuck I prefer for the Leinen lathe. I would prefered those kind of “old” chucks which are lighter than the modern ones. Having found no provider for these lighter chucks, finally I went for this one. The chuck can be seen in this picture: The chuck was in pretty good condition.
